Legendary Pflugerville coach Charles Kuempel dies

PFLUGERVILLE (FanstandATX) — Charles Kuempel, a legendary football coach at Pflugerville High School, died Thursday afternoon in a traffic accident.

Williamson County officials reported a fatal single-car wreck just before 2:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon along County Road 458 near Coupland. The wreck remains under investigation. 85-year old Kuempel lost his life in the crash.

Kuempel coached the Pflugerville Panthers to a 55-game winning streak – a national record at the time – between 1958 and 1962. Kuempel and the Panthers also scored district championships in 1955, and bi-district championships in 1963 and 1964.

Kuempel and members of the 1958-1962 teams were honored on the 55th anniversary of that record streak earlier this month at The Pfield, Pflugerville ISD’s new district-wide stadium. The on-campus stadium at Pflugerville High School, used for varsity competition until the opening of The Pfield, was named in Kuempel’s honor.

Kuempel is survived by his wife Gloria, three sons, and seven grandchildren.
